Rosedale Reef

Rosedale Reef is part of the world famous Race Rocks. This reef is located south of Great Race and can be seen just breaking the surface at low tide.  Rosedale is famous for one insidious reason: it sinks ships! These rocks have claimed many ships over the years, and one of the most famous is the Barnard Castle, which now lies just off of Bentick Island in about 30 ft. of water. The reef is covered in life, similar to that that exists on the rest of Race Rocks, just more condensed. The top of the reef is covered in Bull Kelp that in the summer months grow into a thick and lush forest. The rocks are covered in a variety of invertebrate life: multicoloured Brooding Anemones, white Plumose Anemones and yellow sponges. Nudibranchs dot the landscape along with Kelp and Puget Sound King Crabs. Rockfish, greenlings and sculpins all live among the cracks and crevasses and sea lions dart in out of the kelp trying to catch a glimpse of divers. This reef resembles a shallow maze with cuts separating the rocks big enough for divers to swim through and the walls covered in life. This site provides everything an adventurous diver is looking for, however the weather and currents make this site challenging and should only be attempted if the conditions permit.
